Coopered Showcase

62" x 21" x 11"
Ash, red oak, and kwila

The sides of the upper and lower cases and the lower doors are coopered into convex curves in solid ash. This means that the selected wood was sawn into staves, beveled, then rejoined and fared into smooth curves with round-bottomed and flat-bottomed handplanes. Coopering is a means of preserving the grain pattern which would otherwise disappear, and using much less wood to obtain a curve in solid wood. In this instance, it allowed me to resaw, bookmatch, and curved to wrap around the cabinets and provide a harmonious flow of grain and color. There are three adjustable shelves in the showcase and two in the lower cabinet, along with a pair of curved-front drawers behind the doors.
