News and New Work

Book - Front Cover

After nearly a year and a half of being out of print I am very pleased to announce that "Making and Mastering Wood Planes" is back on the shelves! Well, at least it's back on my shelves. Hickory Ridge Press, the fledging publishing arm of David Finck Woodworker inc. has breathed new life into the title with a lovely new front cover, great backcover blurbs, and the addition of a "lay-flat" soft cover binding. Inside is the same great information on building and using handplanes along with a host of tips on woodworking fundamentals. Visit the Book page for ordering information.

I am also just finishing up a batch of my custom plane irons made specifically for the type of wooden plane described in my book. These blades are favored by James Krenov in his own planes and have truly exceptional edge retention. All sizes are currently available. Check the Plane Irons page for more information.

Have you every wished you could really see what was being described in a book rather than just look at a picture? Well,I am in the midst of taping some short videos meant to clarify aspects of the book that may come across better in a video format. I'll be adding to the collection regularly, so visit the Video page often. The first installments are now up.

In the works: I'm currently working on a wall-mounted jewelry box, designing a dining table with a slate top and getting ready to build an OM-type acoustic guitar.

A word about private instruction. I've been spending a lot of time lately with folks on a one-on-one basis, which has been really great. One very succesful activity has been to do hands-on planemaking in a two-day format. Please inquire if you think this may be up your alley.
