These two boxes represent my fifteen minutes of fame, though ironically, my contribution to the Warner Bros. movie of 2008, Nights in Rodanthe, went uncredited, so I guess I'm still fairly anonymous! Nevertheless, the experience was a fun one. I received a call from the property manager of the movie asking if I could design and build two boxes for the movie as well as supply some props and do some coaching. The movie is based on a book of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. I won't summarize the plot, but the leading lady in the movie, Diane Lane, plays a character who was a bit of a woodworker in the past (not in the book) and a pair of boxes play a significant role in the plot (also not in the book!). So I did the boxes and set up a sequence so she could appear to make one of the boxes in the movie. I also supplied some tools and coached Ms. Lane in a few aspects of dovetail joinery. If you watch the movie, pay special attention to the woodworking scene for one of those inevitable small bloopers -- while sharpening a plane iron she's cranking the grinder in reverse. I was supposed to be on set the day of that scene to help catch such errors, but had other committments. Oh well. Is there a Oscar category for "Best Performance by a Box"?
