This client's large and elegant bedroom blended modern eclecticism with classical elements and the request was to come up with a pair of bedside chests that would work with all of that. Art Deco, with its classical formality and modern spareness of line is what immediately came to mind. The design is completely my own but clearly borrows from those themes. The curved side were formed from torsion boxes for incredible strength and stability. The curved drawers feature matched vertical grain and handcut dovetail joinery with individually carved gaboon ebony pulls. I sawed the Macassar ebony veneers about 5x the thickness of commercial veneers to provide a durable, quality surface and the stability that the design required. A real labor of love.
